14: What I Know

“We’ve done five kilometres,” Ant says from behind. “More than a third of the stage.”
I guess he is trying to be encouraging.
“But we will need to speed up,” Uncle says.
Straightaway I’m even more conscious of my feet. Raspy snail teeth are grazing over them. No! The damned creep! I almost stumble at the feeling of my foot-coverings worn through. I swallow a sob of fear. “I need two … two … squares of cloth, bandanna-sized, folded arm-sling style.” A demand, not even a please or thank you. “Sorry. I … I  meant to say please.” I’m almost in tears.
Then I’m ashamed. I did so much …

In which Jeb meets a Mongoose, an Ant and her uncle. But it is the Loon that catches her attention ...

13: The Love-struck Loon

One of the young men rolls it up. I don’t feel like a girl after everything I’ve done, and he’s about the same age I am. He’s taller than me by about a hand. Smooth honey skin. I follow him underneath the mushroom’s cap. As he reaches up and bundles the ladder into a hollow carved into the underside of the cap, he moistens his lips. It’s a catching move. I lick mine. It’s difficult in the dry desert air to keep lips feeling smooth. The mushroom stem is fibrous. “The planet itself carved the cavity, Shaman. With sand and wind. I’m ….”
His voice shakes. His gaze slides away, but not before I see his eyes. Shining wit…

9: The Narrow Yard10: The Black Cell11: Escape

With the difficulties of the black cell behind her, Jeb exults in the freedom of the desert. Until she realises the dun desert sand is just as hungry as the sand in the black cell. Fighting it off she finally comes to a mushroom-shaped platform where she catches up with her uncle. He strokes her with her birth-name, what does he want?

12: The Creeping Desert

When I am a long way from the prison, though I can still see it, I can’t stop myself celebrating. “I’m out, out, out!” I caper on Lotor’s wide desert sands in my double slippers. Starlight plays a big part lighting the world. The sand is a dark red because the exploded superstar, Procyon A, rules the night. The distance to walk is fifty kilometres. Twelve and a half hours when the speed is four kilometres an h…

9: The Narrow Yard10: The Black Cell

Jeb has been in prison for as long as she was in Shaman School learning to get a signal to the ArkShip, so when the ArkShip returns to orbit around Lotor, she manages to sing up her call sign. Soon after she meets a mysterious stranger and a group of nomadic OldEarth-born, all of them also prisoners but there are many ways of escaping and Jeb intends hers to be through the black cell ...

11: Escape

Or I can prise out the one hundred and eighty cubes and build a staircase to the door lintel.
I set to prising out one brick, two bricks, high-stepping impatiently with every breath I take, before bending again to the knee-high intake aperture. I pull, push to and fro, shift, shove at the only stone that shifted when I tested them. I’ve got it. Hug it to myself. Forget my steppi…

9: The Narrow Yard

Continuing to sing of Lotor in a derogatory way, according to the guards, Jeb is hustled from the narrow yard. How will she escape?

10: The Black Cell

Three guards hustle me into the building. Not up the stairs. They walk me past a bunch of offices, what I can see of them, desks, chairs behind. They remind me of the cells upstairs. Same size, place, same orientation. At the end a door, at right angles to where Tayne’s cell is upstairs. Is there such a door upstairs as well? This door is yanked open and I am thrust in. Door slams. I am in the dark.
Pitch dark, though I see lots of after-perceptions to begin with. The shapes of the men in the enclosure in their opposite colours. Sand-coloured, they uncannily resemble the dun clothed Lotor-born melting into a Field of Dreams. I blink that unco…

Knitting: a long vest

Image
This vest has a couple of years worth of knitting in it. I don't mind that.

But it's good to get it sewn up, ends sewn in and to where I can wear it at last. Now that we are in autumn that may finally happen.

Some of you may recall the above close up of a couple of the strips, knitted on the diagonal using one of the Noro Sockwools. For the bodice/yoke I used a wool/silk mix also by Noro.
